Development of media literacy

The requirements of the labour market presume a complex and readily applicable knowledge gained in various technical disciplines. Media literacy is already seen as the fourth key competence, following reading, writing and arithmetic. In a time in which knowledge becomes out of date more and more quickly, comprehensive media literacy opens access to new knowledge and information and represent one of the requirements for lifelong learning. Besides gaining a practical competence with different types of media the schoolchildren should therefore be trained to develop a critical and responsible way of working with them. They should be encouraged to play with the computer as a medium, as early as the 1. class. In doing so they should be allowed to discover and develop their skills in working with computers and the Internet, based on their own individual level of development - up to gaining the internationally recognized certificate, the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL).
